State has finally came!! I have been looking forward to this day since the beginning of summer but never knew the amount of nerves that it would come with. I gotta figure out this being nervous thing and get better at dealing with them. But I think I'm just blaming my poor performance on the nerves.

First mile went way solid and I finally put myself in a pack with Logan and made sure to stay with him and when I would fall off I would push back. He signaled for me to come join him, that really helped a lot! I started to fall off when we started on the pond. I really pushed hard but couldn't click into the gear I needed to find. Another bad race for the books but I'm looking back on the race to find the postives even if there isn't that much.

Postives:

  • Learning more and more how to race in face races.
  • Reached my goal to run at state!!
  • Had a solid 7 seconds at the beginning of the race.

No doubt you're learning and getting over your nerves is a big part of that. But I can't help but think that you're working against yourself. Fighting against your nerves means having the willpower and intelligence to not get caught up in the first mile. You seem to have a history of going out hard in the first mile and then dropping and dying.

If you can overcome your nerves to hold back in the first mile, you then can have the power to run strong in the last mile. Every second you hold back in the first mile is two seconds faster in your finish.

You can run 5:00, 5:45, 5:45 for 16:30. Or you can run 5:30, 5:15, 5:00 for 15:45. It's your choice, but running slower your first mile enables you to run faster overall, and passing people in the last two miles makes you the opposite of nervous, it makes you excited and energetic.
